A lot of people don’t think about their gutters until they show signs of problems. The main purpose of your gutters is to move rainwater away from your home and the surrounding landscaping, and into a safe drainage area so keeping them in good shape should always be among your top priorities as a homeowner.
When problems occur, gutters are just as prone to trouble as any other part of your home and, in some cases, just as expensive to fix. Luckily some insurance providers cover gutter damage in their policies.
Types of Insurance and Inclusions
The most common type of insurance is called an “all-risk” policy. This coverage can protect your property from almost all types of problems, including damage in your metal roofing system, siding and, more importantly, your gutters. However, despite its name, there are certain exclusions. It excludes damage caused by earthquakes and flooding as well as negligence and regular wear and tear.
Less common among the types of insurance is the “peril” coverage, which specifies which circumstances the insurance will cover the damages. This list can include hail damage, impact damage and storm damage. Anything not listed is strictly not covered.
Claiming Insurance
If you suspect your roof and gutters are damaged, contact your trusted roofing contractor for an inspection as soon as possible. In the meantime, document everything fully, and prepare all the necessary documents pertaining to the affected parts of your home. Then, call your insurance company, who will also send an adjuster for their own assessment.
